English Language Learning (ELL)

ELL 100  Directed Study I    3-9 sem. hrs.

Tutorial-based and by arrangement for students who require assistance with individual language learning needs prior to enrolling in the ELL 101, 102 and 103 course sequence. Does not fulfill core requirement in English. By placement only for non-native speakers. Offered every semester.

ELL 101  Grammar    3 sem. hrs.

Study and practice in English grammar, moving toward more complex constructions. This class focuses on grammatical exercises in comprehension and production of spoken and written sentences. Does not fulfill core requirement in English but does count for foreign language credit. Offered as needed.

Prerequisite: By placement test only for non-native speakers.

ELL 102  Listening/Speaking    3 sem. hrs.

Study and practice in competence and performance of spoken English. The class focuses on listening discrimination, selective listening, accuracy in pronunciation, and oral fluency. Does not fulfill core requirement in English but does count for foreign language credit. By placement test only for non-native speakers. Offered as needed.

ELL 103  Reading/Writing    3 sem. hrs.

Study and practice in reading and writing strategies. The class focuses on vocabulary building, clause structures, and the linguistic and rhetorical conventions of English texts. Does not fulfill core requirement in English but does count for foreign language credit. By placement test only for international students. Offered as needed.

ELL 104  Writing Tutorial    3 sem. hrs.

By arrangement for non-native speakers who did not pass the ENG 102 Writing Assessment Text. The class is a semester-long tutorial in conjunction with the writing assignments students have to complete during the semester in question. Does not fulfill core requirement in English but does count for foreign language credit. By placement only for non-native speakers. Offered as needed.

ELL 200  Directed Study in English    3 sem. hrs.

Tutorial-based and by arrangement for those students who have completed the ELL sequence but require further assistance with individual language learning needs. Does not fulfill core requirement in English but does count for foreign language credit. By placement test only for international students. Offered as needed.
